Do you need someone to cast a critical eye over your novel before you send it to a literary agent or publisher? Someone who knows YA as both a reader and writer? Well, here I am.
How can I help?
My name is Mel Green and I help authors by editing their YA novels in readiness for that fateful day of publication. I want authors to feel confident with the work they are putting out there. Who wants to be worried about errant commas or whether they should have started or ended their sentence with an adverbial? You have a work of fiction you need to get out to the world and I’m here to help you do it right.
Why use me?
As a former teacher and current academic, I am very used to scrutinising other people’s work and providing clear feedback about ways they can improve it. Also, my grammar is on evangelical levels of greatness after years of teaching our nation’s darlings. But please don’t worry, I am not about to get my red pen out and cause you to regress back to detention with Mr Peters in Year 9. I will make clear suggestions and recommendations but you are free to tell me to take a hike if you really want to. As well as a teaching qualification, I have a degree in Psychology and a Master’s in Education.
You know my name, now read my life story. A slightly abridged version. I live in East London, UK with my husband and our two cats. One of them has one eye and the other has three legs. Clearly, they would make fabulous characters for a novella about a group of pirate cats. You are free to take that idea and make what you will of it.
In my spare time, I read … a lot. Usually YA, graphic novels or sci-fi but I have been known to become engrossed in the information on the backs of packets from time to time. I design and sew my own clothes (badly) and bake my own pastries (well) because I am easily inspired by programmes that have the words ‘Great British’ in the title. I also write my own stories, write educational materials for educational publishers and contribute to online magazines. I used to be sporty but that now constitutes watching athletics on the box and renewing/cancelling my gym membership every other month. Finally, and please don’t hold this against me, I love musicals. Ahhh that felt good. I love them. Fred and Ginger make me feel things.
What to do now?
If you are still reading, it means you think I am great and want me to edit your book. So you might as well not fight your feelings and send me a quick email. In your email, let me know what services you need (find out what services I offer on my Services page) and we’ll take it from there. I’ll look forward to reading your email.
